S T R E S S !

For the last few days I have been struggling with a topic to blog about. There have been several really good suggestions but none of them really felt right. This morning I was woken up by a killer migraine and realised I had been clenching my teeth all night. Inspiration struck in the form of a sore jaw and a pounding head.

Stress.

I get stressed easily. It’s mostly my own fault since I have a tendency to internalize everything and this last couple of months have been high stress for me. Whether it be the book that won’t co-operate, money, personal issues or just work, work and more work we all have things that stress us out to varying degrees.

For me this is my busiest time at work – bet you didn’t know midwives had a busy time of year? Think back 9 months, what was happening? Yep Christmas and New Year and parties with copious amounts of alcohol and *celebrating* LOL! So September is hard work for us. Add that to all of the things I mentioned above plus several pending projects and well, I am wound tighter than a spring. There are a lot of articles out there about how to avoid stress or how to make it better but none of them seem to work for me so I guess I just have to get on with it.

Is anything stressing you out at the moment? How do you deal with it?

I totally understand where you're coming from. I felt like this last week. Actually got depression with it too. Not good. But something clicked inside, where I thought: I can't change what's happened, can possibly change what's happening, and I can't control what might happen, so...**** it! I'm going to smile and be as happy as I can in my circumstances. It worked. I hope you get a break from stress soon.

I can always tell I'm really stressed (even when I don't "know" I'm stressed because I wake up with my bedside light on. I find that if I don't write, I get more stressed. I think my brain needs the outlet.

I'm not surprised that midwives get busy this time of year...I'm a September baby and so is my sister!

Deep breath, Cait! I hope things calm down a bit.

Reading is my calming factor. When my plot won't come together, or my characters won't cooperate, or there are too many bills at the end of the money, I lose myself in a book. I can escape from all the awful things in real life, at least for a few hours.

Take care of those babies, Cait!

Add an earthquake to the equation and the babies come in herds. I hear they've been very busy with new babies down in Christchurch.

I find exercise really helps me. A walk, a bike ride or even playing with the Wii Fit. There's something about the physical activity that relaxes me and helps me cope better.

Hey Cait,
Stress is a tough b****h to beat. It's hit me more times than I can count or care to remember. I have noticed that when I exercise it tends to be less intense.
I've heard sex is a great way to work it out. Since you're younger than I, maybe you should test this theory and let me know.
Can't wait to see you.

I never really thought about midwives having a busy season, but it makes perfect sense.

I try, but I'm not real good with stress. I read to relax. I should get back to walking. That was always good.

Cait,
Often we stress out because we are trying to control things that can't be controlled. I have the most stress when I think I can control things that I can't. In other words, what Natalie said. I also get stressed when I don't write enough to drain off all that internal stuff. Exercise also helps me. Here's to less stress in your life soon!

Thanks for your replies everyone! Excercise seems to be the consensus...that's never been my best thing LOL! Though I kinda think I could try combining that with Tara's idea...
