Packing Light?

In two weeks time I leave for the Romantic Times Booklovers Convention in Chicago. I know I’m a little early but I am having a weeklong side-trip to New Orleans before flying on up to the Windy City. My mind is full of the possibilities of travel what will I do, where will I go and above all, what will the weather be like? This leaves me with a problem… two different climates. Packing might be an issue…

Having said that, packing is ALWAYS a problem for me.

How do you light packers do it? Part of my problem is that I am a planner, seriously, lists and schedules are my thing. I am not physically capable of leaving things to chance. I get cold sweats just thinking about it. I will have to pack for hot and cool plus stuff for the RT Con and any other eventuality that comes to me meantime. I have dresses, shorts and jeans and costumes and swag to think about. Then there’s medication, migraine, asthma, allergies….then there were those times when I got tonsillitis so maybe I should bring antibiotics… Shoes! Sneakers, walking shoes, heels sandals to wear with those dresses and shorts. Jewellery, gotta be blinged out. Also toiletries cos I have my favourite brands of everything and god knows I can’t leave those at home. Electronics, of course those all have to be in my carry on with the jewellery. Netbook, ereader (thank GOD for the ereader cos books were another packing issue), camera, phone and all the assorted chargers. There’s no WAY I can fit all that in one 20kg bag! I say it again, how do you people manage to pack light?

Packing is an art form in itself, lol! The only tip I have that's been learned over the years is to plan your wardrobe around core pieces that can be layered. And if you're coordinated it can really cut down on the need for several pairs of shoes. Accessories like scarves and jewelry can be packed rolled or flat in little zippered cases.

If you keep your main wardrobe pared down you might have enough room for all the party clothes you need for RT:) Have fun!

Yikes, the thought of packing for both eventualities is making my mind boggle. Paris has super tips there though! Layers is key. I must remember that too. (Right now I'm trying to work out how to safely pack a top hat for the RT Steampunk event. The best I've come up with so far is to stuff it full of undies and PJs for the trip. Let's hope no one opens my case and picks the hat up, eh. Could be embarrassing. ;o)

LAYERS! The heaviest thing in my baggage is my CPAP machine. (And I take a size 12 shoe!)

For a Fri-Sun weekend, like MidSouth (this weekend): 1 pr of jeans, 2 pr underwear, a strapless bra if needed. 2 short sleeved blouses/tshirts, a long sleeved blouse, a skirt, 1 evening dress & hose, a shawl, a jacket (if heading north). 1 pr of dress shoes. Makeup, jewelry, scent, comb, toothbrush. My walking shoes are on my feet.

If I'm doing costuming, that replaces some of the daytime clothes. My steampunk outfit is boots, slacks, suspenders, a blouse, vest, hat and goggles. I would leave out the jeans (plan to wear Friday's jeans Sunday) & long sleeved blouse.

Thanks for the tips guys! I'll try to follow your advice but I'm not sure I'm capable of success LOL!

How do we do it? Practice, practice, practice...
I put together a core wardrobe of pants and shirts to be used as the base for everything. I once wore the base dress for a Faery ball costume the next day over a pair of pants and turtleneck shirt and no one noticed. Layers are definitely the thing.

I wrote a whole blogpost on packing for a RWA/WDW trip a couple of years ago. Check it out: http://voicesftheart.blogspot.com/2010/07/packing-for-rwa-and-walt-disney-world.html
